On August 17, 2018, the 70th Annual Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles in California at the Microsoft Theatre. The Emmys’ kicked off with one hell of an opening number on Monday night that helped set the tone for the rest of the award show. Saturday Night Live vets Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson hit the stage to perform a song called “We Solved It” that hilariously (and sarcastically) called out Hollywood’s diversity “fix.”
There were lots of famous celebrities that came dressed very nice for the event. In all the 70 years of Emmy Awards, this year has been the most diverse. By the most diverse, I mean the people that were nominated. There were four categories of TV shows who won.
The most popular shows that won were Game of Thrones for best drama series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for best comedy and Versace, which is a limited series about an American crime story. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won best supporting actress which is Alex Borstein. They also won for best leading actress, Rachel Brosnahan. They also won best casting for a comedy series.
Have you heard of Glenn Weiss? Well, you’ve probably heard about the proposal at the Emmy’s. That was Glenn Weiss. He proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. The fun part is that he didn’t tell anyone. Not even the people who ran the Emmy’s. No one. But, there was a lot of cheering, laughter, smiling, clapping, and crying (in a good way.) He began by talking about his mother, who died just two weeks before the ceremony. But she would want him to focus on the sunshine in his life, and so Weiss turned to his own “sunshine,” Jan Svendsen. “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend?” Weiss had started. “Because I want to call you my wife.” It took Svendsen about 2 seconds to realize what had just happened. Everyone started clapping, cheering, crying, and, laughing. Svendsen walked up to the stage where Weiss was standing, crying with a smile. Once she reached the stage, Glenn Weiss bent down on one knee, and proposed to Svendsen.
Henry Winkler is a 72 year-old American Actor and has never won an Emmy Award in his entire carrier. However, that changed. Winkler won his first ever Emmy at the 70th Annual Emmy Awards, this year. Winkler expresses that he has been waiting for this day and says, “Skip Brittenham said to me a long time ago, if you stay that the table long enough, the chips come to you, and tonight, I got to clear the table!” This years Emmy Awards are on of the most prominent Emmy’s yet. They were the most diverse in terms of who won, and which shows won.
This years Emmy’s had the most diverse group of Emmy nominees in Emmy history. People were very excited about this years awards. They had a good impact on everyone watching them. People can wait for next year’s Emmy’s.
