There are many politically outspoken celebrities. Emma Watson, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Meryl Strep, and Mark Ruffalo, just to name a few. Taylor Swift never thought she would be placed on that list of activists, until now. At this years American Music Awards, Taylor broke her silence by giving a speech on the importance of placing your vote.
Her speech was followed by an Instagram post about her who she will be voting for in the Midterm elections. “I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.
Although over 100,000 people registered to vote in the 24 hours after Swift’s speech, she has still been receiving backlash. Many politicians joined in on the action. When president Trump was asked his opinion on her new voice, he told reporters “ Let’s just say I like her music 25% less now, okay?” Charlie Kirk, president of conservative group Turning Point USA, tweeted: “You just endorsed a Democrat in the Tennessee Senate race with a ridiculous statement saying Marsha Blackburn, a woman, is against women. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.”
It is important to remember to not be pressured into those decisions of power-hungry men and women. Just like Taylor Swift did, remember you have a voice; and that is one thing that can both fight and unite.
